Hannah Heaume

Spend ten seconds exploring Hannah Heaume's Instagram account, and I guarantee you'll find yourself lusting over far-flung travel destinations and all of those vibrantly colored wall murals. Not only is Hannah an incredible photographer, but she's also the creator of a fashion and travel blog called The Sunny Side of Things. There, she details the best places to eat, sleep, and have fun in a variety of amazing locales all over the world. And man, does she do it in style! I'm absolutely thrilled that this talented, joyful woman is my very first interview on Gutsy Girl Living.

Introducing Hannah Heaume:

Let's start with a fun one! What's been your bravest moment?

"I am travel obsessed but my travel story doesn’t go back very far. My family didn’t travel much when I was growing up. Actually, my first real trip was to Arizona with my mom and sister in 2008. I got to dip my toes in and seeing the Grand Canyon definitely sparked something inside of me but I didn’t yet know what it was. Fast forward to 2012 and my second big trip, Alaska. This is when I knew. I remember the day I landed in Anchorage as if it was yesterday. Bright eyed and bushy tailed ready to take on the Last Frontier. Day four of this trip brought us to Matanuska Glacier. Despite the warning signs for “thin ice” I climbed down into the glacier. I sat there for about ten minutes chatting with other travelers and eventually following them out further. In true Hannah style I was wearing Hunter rain boots, not the best hiking footwear especially on a glacier! Out on the glacier there was a small stream; I cupped my hands and took a sip of the freshest water I’ve ever had. It was ICE cold. You may be asking 'how did this chick know it was it clean?.' I DIDN’T.

But that wasn’t my gutsiest, craziest story! Instead, its that one time I decided to go on my first international trip with a COMPLETE stranger. Literally, we had never met before aside from a few emails and Instagram comments. Don’t worry, everything worked out better than I could ever imagine and now we’re travel besties for life! What led you to become a travel blogger?

"Like I said, my love of travel didn’t start at a young age. It took me 22 years to realize it. And blogging? I thought about starting a blog for a WHILE. And when I say a while I mean like 4 years. But it never felt like the “right time” to do it. I was in college, my writing wasn’t where I wanted it to be and I didn’t really have a burning passion inside of me to give it my all.

After a lot of writing and soul searching I started The Sunny Side of Things in 2015. Forming this creative outlet for myself is truly the best decision I ever made. It brings me so much happiness when I see other like-minded women commenting on and relating to my stories. Their reassurance means the world to me. It makes me feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be."

What is your boldest goal for the near future?

"This is a tough one for me. I’m not really keen on setting goals for myself. I don’t know why. But it is never too late to start. Right? I think one goal I have is to grow my blog into a style and travel resource for women around the world. Maybe even publishing a book, creating an app or even creating my own clothing line could be in the future. I’m not quite sure yet!"

One last question, Hannah! What does being "gutsy" mean to you?

"To me, gutsy means breaking down the barriers and going after what you really want in this life. We are only given one chance to do it right. So go out there and find your happy."
